LMS Basics
A Learning
Management System (LMS) is a software
application or Web-based technology used to
plan, implement, and assess all learning events
within a training organization. Typically, this
will include all instructor-led, online, virtual
classroom and proprietary courses. An LMS
automates the cumbersome process of learner
enrollment, registration, records, transcripts,
schedules, reports and other advanced
administrative tasks. Organizations may also
choose to deploy a Learning Content Management
System (LCMS) in conjunction with their LMS. An
LCMS allows organizations to create, publish and
manage course content.
The purpose of an LMS is to accelerate learning
and improve human capital across the
organization by providing a systematic approach
to managing learning programs, assessing
performance and improving operational
efficiency. Companies know that their
knowledge-based human capital is what gives them
the edge in any marketplace. Based on this, they
are now looking toward their training
departments to play a more strategic role in
their organization.
